NEXT TUESDAY IS ELECTION DAY

The Elections Division has finalized preparations for the municipal general election being held next Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

On the ballot: Judges of the Supreme Court, Superior Court, Commonwealth Court, and Common Pleas Court; County Executive, District Attorney, Treasurer, Controller, County-Council At-Large (and some District seats), Magisterial District Judges (in most areas), School Directors, and Municipal Officials. There is also a countywide referendum question, judicial retention questions, and depending on where you live, municipal referendum questions too.

Regardless of how you will be voting, the Elections Division has some reminders for you.

MAIL-IN, ABSENTEE BALLOT RETURN

For those voters who applied for and received a mail-in or absentee ballot who have not yet returned it, the Elections Division has extended hours, including weekend hours, for curbside ballot return. Voters may simply come to the County Office Building (542 Forbes Avenue), pull up on the Ross Street side of the building (between Forbes and Fourth avenues) and deliver their ballot to Elections staff right inside the building.

EMERGENCY ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Voters who planned to vote in-person but are no longer able to go to their polling place due to illness, disability, or absence from the municipality may apply for an emergency absentee ballot. Voters may to go to the Elections Division to request an application or may download and complete the online form, along with a designated agent form, and have someone deliver it for you.

IN-PERSON VOTING AT POLLING PLACES

All 1,324 precincts in the county will be open on Tuesday, November 7 from 7 AM to 8 PM. If there is a line at 8 PM, anyone in that line will be allowed to vote.

A total of 36 polling places have changed since the primary. A mailing was sent to voters in those districts last week of advising them of the new location. The “old” locations will be posted with signage as well to direct voters to the new site.

Before going to the polling place, consider:

Voters who are new to the voting precinct, even if they’re not a new voter, will be asked to show ID pursuant to state and federal law.

CANVASSING OF ABSENTEE, MAIL-IN BALLOTS

Pre-canvassing of the absentee and mail-in ballots received by the Elections Division will begin at 7 AM on Election Day. Over 100 county employees will process the ballots under the supervision of Elections staff. Declaration envelopes will be reviewed to ensure they are signed and correctly dated.
Those that are not will be set aside and not counted. Once the declaration envelope is open, security envelopes will be extracted. Any ballot that is returned that is not in the security envelope will be returned to the declaration envelope and the entire packet will be set aside and not counted.

Once ballots are extracted, they will be flattened and prepped for scanning. Ballots are scanned throughout the day, but the results are not pulled until the end of the day. Results report out shortly after 8 PM. Based on the current number of ballots that have been returned (89,845 of 141,052 as of 11 AM this morning), the Elections staff expects to have all of those ballots opened, processed, counted, and reporting out at 8 PM.

THANK A POLL WORKER

Over 6,800 poll workers are scheduled for this election with polling places having four or more poll workers based on registration numbers at locations. The county also has a bench of workers that can be used to replace someone if a poll worker gets ill, has an emergency, or some other need that would prevent them from working.
Our elections would not be possible without these dedicated, hard-worker volunteers. Please, thank a poll worker today!
ELECTION RESULTS

Election results will begin posting at 8 PM. Results from mail-in and absentee ballots are expected to post first, with in-person elections results beginning to post around 9-9:30 PM. Results will be posted through the evening until all 1,324 polling place materials are returned.

Results will be posted on the Elections Results page: https://results.enr.clarityelections.com/PA/Allegheny/118632/web.317647/#/summary.
